China's Wars

Sino-Portuguese War (1849-52)

-following British Wars > Popular Revolution (1827-9) and loss of Goa, Portugal focuses on Macau

-in 1842 governor builds a road from city wall to extent of Portuguese claim of Macau

-ends up with him beheaded

-result is Portuguese declaration of war

-Portugal does extremely well

-despite navy being middling by European standards, modern enough and Chinese one really shit

-refuses entreaties of peace

-takes over pearl river delta

-eventually reaches Shanghai, Chinese sue for peace

-Chinese surrender treaty ports, grant Portugal full ownership of Macau

Opium Expedition (1853-4)

Transition from Qing to Bai (1854-63)

-see Heads of China > 1858-1888 Mingzhi Emperor

-by some counts, continued till 1899 in a rather technical sense

-but 1863 is the year it's clear the Qing cannot hope to reclaim their great kingdom

-aside from Manchuria and Mongolia

-totally brutal war with death toll of 20-30 million

Yunnan-Burmese War (1865-8)

-controversy over Shan state claims which turns to war

-ends with Yunnan incorporating the Shan states under it

Russo-Chinese War (1893-9)

Kashgar Intervention (1905-7)

-with Young Russian Revolution (1902-8) there are rebellions across Central Asia

-with a rebellion in Kashgaria and Ili river China decides to intervene

-Chinese alliance with the Sardarbeg of Kashgaria and rebels in Kulja

-skirmishes with Russia

-intervention succeeds

-China's treaty with Russia sees its independence confirmed well afterwards

Xinchou Revolution (1901)

-with rise of Lee Cheng-chang as Heads of China > 1901-1926 Lee Cheng-chang (Tsuyu-Tungi-Tang) †

-his military putsch is successful to cheering crowds

-achieves loyalty of most governors and those who aren't loyal are swiftly overthrown

Renwu Revolution (1941-3)

-with ascent of power of Heads of China > 1942-1951 Zhou Chuan marking its big moment and for which it's called Renwu (after the year the power change happened)
